Abstract This paper develops a flood model in order to analyze the maximum water level and the drainage ability of the area in the Chi River basin. The analysis is based on Drainage Density and Gumbel Distribution Functions that have been shown to be generally effective with the areas in Thailand [1], [2]. The study area is Phra Lup district that is separated from the Khon Kaen City only by a bypass road. A heavy flood on that area will directly affect the city. The data of monthly water levels from the hydrological station (E.16A) of the year 2005-2010 and the height and the distance from the Chi River are used. The results from Gumbel Distribution Functions show that the recurrence period of the maximum water level is approximately 2 years. The water level at the recurrence period is approximately 152 m.(MSL.). This results show 0.46-2.61% error when tested with real data. The results of the drainage density show that the area close to the Chi River has overall good drainage ability and worsen further away from the river and closer to the bypass road. This information is a basic data for flood forecasting and flood warning system.
