Abstract Size distributions of pig in fattening units create difficulty in supply procurement in swine industry. In this paper, a mathematical model and heuristic based on mixed integer programming model has been developed. The objective of the models are to minimize total cost including the shortage cost, the holding cost, the penalty cost, transportation cost, feed cost, and under utilization cost. Simulated sets of data were generated to compare the performance of the two models. The results showed that heuristic took considerably shorter computational time and obtained solutions slightly differ from those of the mathematical model.
