     Abstract ABSTRACT The purposes of the present study were to investigate Thai EFL learners’ L2 semantic formulas of expressing gratitude in thanking, and to examine the influence of interlocutor’s social status as a context-external social factor on their L2 gratitude expression formula construction. The participants in this study were thirty non-English major fourth year undergraduate students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University. The research instruments were discourse completion task (DCT) and semi-structured interview. The participants were asked to response in 8 thanking situations comprised of eight types of thanking in invitation, thanking for favor, thanking for material goods, thanking for immaterial goods, thanking for some action, thanking for a request, thanks that imply indebtedness, and thanks that imply debtedness. Beside this, the different social status of interlocutors were included: a person of higher status and a person of equal status. The participants then were interviewed about their expressions. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The data were counted as a frequency and a percentage. A qualitative analysis focused on the gratitude production presented in the eight given situations, according to the influences of social status. The results of the study revealed that ‘Thanking’ is the most frequently used semantic formulas for Thai EFL learners. Thai EFL learners typically employed thanking semantic formula in most situations. The result found that Thai EFL learners used more semantic formula in equal social status situation. That is to say, the different social status of interlocutor influences the expression. The result in this study might facilitate language teachers and learners to be aware of the differences in using and learning language in any new target language. In addition, the result of this study showed that language teachers should instruct and encourage all eight semantic gratitude semantic formulas when expressing gratitude in English. Eventually, this study may encourage Thai EFL learners to extend the lexical components of their gratitude expressions in a variety of L2 situations, instead of limiting their responses to “Thank you” only.
