Abstract The northeast region of Thailand or “ESAN region” has been confronting poverty for decades. These circumstances have initiated people in the region to make a decision to migrate to other regions, in order to procure a better life. Many Esan migrants chose to work in the fishing industry, which is considered as a dangerous job, and contains a high risk of human trafficking. This paper reveals migration contexts, particularly patterns and conditions, of ESAN migrants moving into the fishing industry. Qualitative approach was adopted in the study to find out patterns and conditions of migration. Current and ex-fishing migrants, community seniors, and fishing industry related-persons were selected as key informants to collect the qualitative data. The results indicate that poverty, the development plan, and local practices are significant conditions that encourage the locals to migrate into the fishing industry. Additionally, patterns of migration are presented periodically to clarify the directions and channels used in their emigration, from their places of origin to the destination. However, the ones who decide to work in the fishing industry are confronted by the risk of human trafficking, and other unpredictable impacts upon their life.
