The study of linguistics is the study of systematic patterns of language from a variety of perspectives. In ENG 308, an introduction to the field of linguistics, students will be introduced to various sub-fields of linguistics including the “internal” aspects of language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, psycholinguistics) and the way language is used “externally” (pragmatics/sociolinguistics). This course will introduce you to a number of tools and techniques used by linguists to describe how language is organized and invite you to examine major assumptions about language including common misperceptions about particular (forms of) languages, the people who speak those languages, and language in general.
