This course considers historical, descriptive, and social aspects of the standardization of English and how that impacts English language instruction. Although it is common to find charged accounts arguing for the benefits of a ‘standard’ form of English in education, sensible resolutions concerning a Standard English require a clear understanding of what a standard is. This course examines issues related to standardization of English and relates those issues to ESL/EFL classrooms. Through class presentations, discussions, short response papers, and a final research paper, students will explore this complex issue. All students are expected to be prepared for class. This means reading to material before coming to class, submitting work on time, and actively participating in class. All assignments should be typed.
