Abstract |
In most mathematics classroom, teachers usually lecture and demonstrate to students. The
method lacked of context or situation to help promote mathematical learning process.
However teachers could improve their classroom by using open approach. Open approach as a
teaching approach provided various opportunities for all students to learn with their own
potentiality. Ideas of open-approach method are opening up the hearts of students toward
mathematics, openness and types of problems and evaluation of students’ responses (Nohda,
2000). They communicate their ideas with classmates and teacher by verbal language and
gestures. Gestures play an important role in supporting thinking and communication
processes. Children’s gestures were not only to fill the gap in children’s speaking but gesture
presented the valuable information represented children’s thought. Gesture was a boundary of
observable body action. The purpose of the study was to study students’ mathematical
communication through gestures in classroom using open approach. This study used
qualitative research methodology using video analysis and analytical transcription obtaining
from video tape and audio tape recorder in the 5th grade classroom using open approach at
Ban Bungneum Bungkrinoon School. Data was analyzed based on Emori’s (2005)
characteristics of mathematical communication: rigorousness, economy, and freedom. The
results indicated that students communicated with concise message which was a characteristic
of mathematical communication as economy. Students used the most deictic gestures to
communicate own ideas to classmates and teacher. |
