Abstract Abstract Basic anatomy of nasal septum (NS) is important for clinical assessments of some nasal surgeries. The NS is located at the center of the cranio-facial structure and supports the shape of the external nose. The NS is composed of the septal cartilage (SC) including its unusual process called sphenoidal process (SP), the per-pendicular plate of ethmoid (PPE), and the vomer (VO). The anatomical variations of the NS have been documented to be different among populations. In Thais; however, the anatomy of this structure has not been reported. Therefore this study aimed to define the anatomy of NS in Thai-Northeast cadavers. Both male and female NS specimens (N = 54) were dissected, photographed, and measured NS’s areas systemically using Image-Pro Plus 2.0 software. .Each nasal septum image was performed with the triplicate measurements in three different days. The results showed that total area of NS was 2,185 ± 347.93 mm2. In addition, the areas of total nasal septum and of each PPE, VO, and SC in males are significantly larger than those of female (P < 0.05). In males, the nasal septal area was 2,260 ± 287.76 mm2 whereas 2,047.73 ± 411.13 mm2 was of females. Individually, the areas of PPE, VO, and SC of males were 1,097.74 ± 156.80 mm2, 577.41 ± 119.27 mm2, and 577.49 ± 119.27 mm2. In contrast to males, the areas of PPE, VO, and SC of females were 947.27 ± 205.97 mm2, 552.48 ± 142.25 mm2, and 497.60 ± 141.66 mm2 respectively. Moreover, the mean length of the SP in both sexes was 10.40 ± 4.43 mm. This basic study may provide the important information for decision making before performing septoplasty, rinoplasty, or facial reconstruction in Thai-Northeast population. Keywords: nasal septum, cadavers, perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone, vomer bone, septal cartilage
