Abstract |
The anatomical variations of the nasal septum have been shown to be different among populations and are important for clinical assessments. These variations differ in areas of the total nasal septal skeletons; perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone (PPE), vomer bone (VB), and septal cartilage (SC). However, these documents are still limited in Thai populations. Therefore this study attempted to investigate the total nasal septal area and correlation among septal components in North Eastern Thai cadaver specimens. Both male and female nasal septums were dissected, photographed, and measured systemically using Image-Pro Plus 2.0 software (Media Cybernetics, Silver Spring, USA). Each nasal septum images was performed with the triplicate measurements in three different days. The results showed that the total area of the nasal septum was 2,198.02 ± 348.40 mm2 in general. Interestingly the areas of total nasal septum and of each nasal septum components (PPE, VB, and SP) in males are significantly higher than those of females
(P < 0.05). In males, the nasal septal area was 2,302.66 ± 342.15 mm2 whereas 1,990.15 ± 242.09 mm2 was of females. Individually the areas of PPE, VB, and SC of males were 1,131.64 ± 148.86 mm2, 597.34 ± 140.84 mm2, and 639.32 ± 132.71 mm2, respectively. In contrast to males, the areas of PPE, VB, and SC of females were 952.35 ± 90.42 mm2, 547.79 ± 125.74 mm2, and 407.88 ± 97.74 mm2, respectively. This study may provide the basic information for considerations of septoplasty, rinoplasty, or facial reconstruction in Thai populations.
