The previous studies demonstrated that anatomical variations of the nasal septum differ among populations (e.g., Americans, Indians, and Koreans) and are also essential for clinical assessments. These variations differ in areas of the total nasal septum and of individual perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone (PPE), vomer bone (VB), and septal cartilage (SC). However, these variations have never been reported in Thai populations. To demonstrate such variations, this study aimed to measure the total nasal septal area with their correlations among particular septum components in 40 North Eastern Thai cadavers. Systemically, both 25-male and 15-female nasal septum were photographed and further measured the areas using Image-Pro Plus 2.0 software (Media Cybernetics, Silver Spring, USA). In three different days, individual nasal septum image was performed with the triplicate measurements. The results showed that the total area of the nasal septum was 2,144.86 ± 333.10 mm2 (in both sexes). Interestingly the areas of total nasal septum and of each nasal septum components (PPE, VB, and SP) in males were significantly higher than those of females (P < 0.05). The total septal area was 2,221.81 ± 292.12 mm2 in male whereas 1,987.27 ± 354.91 mm2 was of females. Particularly, the areas of PPE, VB, and SC of males were 1,071.62 ± 149.43 mm2, 573.15 ± 130.57 mm2, and 585.19 ± 122.21 mm2, respectively. In contrast to males, the areas of PPE, VB, and SC of females were 931.59 ± 174.57 mm2, 527.57 ± 132.60 mm2, and 480.63 ± 135.04 mm2, respectively. This study demonstrated the nasal septum morphometry of Thais for the first time. This may provide the basic anatomy information of Thai nasal septum for clinical consideration in many nasal surgeries. |
