Abstract A large amount of cassava rhizome is left in the field after harvest in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand, while at the same time pottery investors have problems with finding firing fuel. The objectives of this research were to investigate experimentally the use of cassava rhizome to replace firewood for Dan Kwian pottery firing in this province. The investigation included the physical properties involved, the heat balance and the fuel costs. The results show that the physical properties of cassava rhizomes are similar to wood but they have higher moisture content. When the rhizomes are burned to give thermal energy to produce pottery products, the temperature profile of the rhizomes is similar to the profile of wood fuels. The heat loss of both fuels is a little different in kiln components, but the other losses for cassava rhizome are higher than wood. As a result, the typical quantity of rhizome required and burning time are higher than for wood fuel. However, the cost of cassava rhizome is less than wood fuel. Therefore, using cassava rhizome to replace wood fuel is feasible but it is necessary to control the moisture content to an appropriate level.
