Abstract The preparation and properties of semiconductor particles have been interested due to their potential applications such as solar cell and optoelectronic devices. The hybrid strategy is a promising way of constructing innovative inorganic-organic and inorganic-inorganic functional materials with ordered nanostructure and advantage properties, which generally differ from those of the pure host and guest species, being affected by host-guest and guest-guest interactions. Smectites, provide attractive features such as large surface area, ion exchange property and so on. Here, we report the hybrid materials of zinc oxide-smectites (ZnO-montmorillonite and ZnO-saponite) because the properties of zinc oxide particles might be significantly affected by the host material. ZnO was synthesized from the aqueous solutions of zinc chloride and sodium hydroxide at the molar ratio 1:15 for Zn2+:OH-. ZnO-smectites were prepared by adding the aqueous mixtures of zinc chloride and sodium hydroxide into the suspension of Na-smectites with continuous stirring at 70 °C for 24 h. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM, IR, UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The reflections revealed at d = 0.28, 0.26 and 0.25 nm, indicating the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO. The basal spacings of ZnO-montmorillonite and ZnO-saponite were observed at 1.52 and 1.48 nm, respectively, together with the reflections of hexagonal wurtzite ZnO at d = 0.28, 0.26 and 0.25 nm. The diffuse reflectance absorption spectra of ZnO, ZnO-montmorillonite and ZnO-saponite exhibited the onsets at 383, 375 and 377 nm, respectively. The photoluminescence band was observed at 541 nm for ZnO, at 548 nm for ZnO-montmorillonite or at 544 nm for ZnO-saponite, which can be attributed to singly ionized oxygen vacancy in ZnO. The enhancement of emission intensity of ZnO hybrids was thought to be caused by the increase in oxygen vacancies and/or decrease in the size of ZnO due to surrounding environment of smectites.
