     Abstract Ketoconazole (KET) is a synthetic antifungal drug belonging to the imidazole family. In animals and human, KET causes the reduction of testosterone levels and sperm concentration, and testicular damages. Previous studies showed the protective effects of many plants on testicular damages in KET-treated rats. Clitoria ternatea (CT) flowers have been used as food complementary and drinking additives in many countries including Thailand. CT was proven to have antioxidant activities and hepatoprotective effects. To provide a protective effect of aqueous CT flower extract on the decrease of testosterone and sperm number in KET-rats, this study was aimed to investigate the alterations of testosterone level and sperm number in rats treated with KET in consecutive 7 days. Thirty-six adult male rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (6 animals/ group): 1) control, 2) KET (100 mg/kg Bw), 3) CT100 (100 mg/kg Bw), 4) CT10 (10 mg/kg Bw) + KET, 5) CT50 (50 mg/kg Bw) + KET and 6) CT100 (100 mg/kg Bw) +KET groups. In preventive periods, CT extract was administered orally for 28 days. Then, KET (100mg/kgBW) was co-administered orally with CT for 7 days. After administration, all rats were sacrificed and collected blood to measure testosterone levels and count the epididymal sperm. The result showed testosterone levels in all protective groups were not significantly decreased as compared to KET group. Their hormone levels were similar to that of control. In addition, sperm concentration in all protective groups was not significantly decreased as compared to KET group. Moreover, the levels of testosterone and sperm concentration in only CT-treated group did not change from the control values, indicating that it is not toxic to spermatogenesis process. These findings suggested that CT can effectively prevent the reduction of testosterone level and sperm number in KET-treated rats.
