Abstract Objectives: The aim of this survey was to explore the knowledge, perceptions and practice of the population living in the semi-urban communities within Khon Kaen province with regard to osteoporosis prevention, and to determine the relationship between knowledge, practice and demographic factors. Methods: Structured interviews supported with questionnaires were used as a survey tool. Knowledge about osteoporosis was measured with 10 true or false questions, perceptions about osteoporosis prevention were measured by using 10 opinionated statements, the response level of agreement ranged from 1(strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Practice of promoting bone formation and maintenance was measured with 17 items about life style and eating behaviors. The scale of frequency of practice ranged from 0 (almost never), 1 (sometimes), 2 (often), 3 (almost always) collated data was analyzed by using SPSS for windows, Version 11.5. Results: following the completion of the data collection period, 200 people were interviewed, of 10 knowledge questions, approximately 43 % (86/200) of the respondents could answer > 8 questions correctly, the mean level of agreement of perceptions about osteoporosis prevention was 3.2 (SD= 0.37, Min = 2.4, Mix = 4.8). The mean frequency of practice to promote bone formation and maintenance was 1.4 (SD= 0.68, Min = 0.1, Mix =3.0). It appeared that there was no association between demographic factors and knowledge regarding osteoporosis, demographic factors which were statistically significantly associated with practice of promoting bone formation and maintenance consisted of females aged 60 years old and above, having bone mass density scan in the last two years, as well as independent living. Conclusion: interventions to educate public about the prevention of osteoporosis and interventions to promote positive perceptions as well as good practice should be further investigated. Keywords: communities in Khon Kaen, osteoporosis preventive behavior
