     Abstract We successfully intercalated the mixed CdS-ZnS semiconductors in the interlayer spaces of montmorillonite by solid-solid and solid-liquid reactions. The incorporation and/or formation of CdS and ZnS were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, as well as UV-visible and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The XRD patterns of the hybrids showed the basal spacing of ca. 1.5 nm, showing the gallery height of about 0.5 nm. The absorption spectra of the products synthesized by solid-solid and solid-liquid reactions revealed the onsets at 480 and 484 nm, corresponding to the band gap values of 2.59 and 2.57 eV, respectively. The photoluminescence spectra of both products showed the emission peaks centered at 440, 450 and 469 nm. These optical behaviors of the hybrids could be attributed to the formation of mixed CdS-ZnS in montmorillonite.
