Abstract A data mining framework for controlling hard disk drive products’ quality and improving yield of the manufacturing processes is proposed. The framework focuses on finding influencing factors on hard disk drives’ yield and their quality using the Contingency Tables and Apriori algorithm. Moreover the framework also includes a quality monitoring and prescreening model for detection of defective products using neural networks. Our preliminary results reveal that using the Contingency Tables in conjunction with Apriori algorithm is quite effective in identifying the influencing process variables. Furthermore, the constructed neural network is very successful in modeling a pre-screening and quality monitoring model. These results give us a premising outcome for future implementation.
