Abstract
In the view of forensic science, age estimation, besides gender and race, is one to the most
important data for person identification, both for verification and recognition. This could
become further complicated in the case of unknown bodies or parts of body. The hard tissues
of human dentition are able to resist degradation and, to limited extent, incineration long after
other tissue is lost. This study aims to examine correlation between the known chronological
age and the number of tooth cementum annulations (TCA) in Thai adults. All extracted teeth
with known age and with date when extracted were collected from Sri-Nakarin Hospital and
Faculty of Dentistry, Khon Kaen University, and Department of Dentistry, Pakchongnana
Hospital, Thailand. Blood and soft tissue were removed by cleanwater and left for air dried.
The root length wasmeasured and the middle third level was marked. Using BuehlerIsomet
saw, teeth were cut perpendicular to surfaceof the root. This would yielda better contrast
between light and dark bands of the annulation. Five thin cross-sections,approximately 0.8
mm in thickness, were obtained from the middle third level. Then, each cross-section was
rubbed on wet polished stone until TCA could be seen under microscope. Prior to
mounting, sectionsneeded to be cleaned and dehydrated using 100 percent ethanol and xylene.
Sectionswere viewed under polarized microscope with magnification at 200X and images
captured by using digital camera. To analyze,TCA were counted and average from 4 selected
areas per root in whichthe edge of root canal toward root surface wasincluded.. For intraexaminer
assessment, the Kappa analysis was calculated prior to experiment. . Linear
regression was used to analyze the correlation between numbers of incremental lines and
known age.Regression model is Y=17.1644+1.0834X; Known age=17.1644+1.0834number
of incremental lines. Which is 0.7455.
