Abstract Cytogenetics and characterization of microsatellites d(CGG)10, d(CA)15 and telomeric regions on the genome of blacktail snapper (Lutjanus fulvus) were studied by the classical cytogenetics and fluorescence in situ hybridization techniques. The result show that L. fulvus had the diploid chromosome number (2n) was 48 and the fundamental number (NF) were 48 in both males and females. The karyotypes compose of all telocentric chromosomes, 22 large, 24 medium and 2 small telocentric chromosomes. No cytologically distinguishable sex chromosome was observed. The NORs bearing chromosome showed that a polymorphism of different sized in chromosome pair nine. In addition, the microsatellite d(CGG)10 hybridization results confirmed the polymorphic NORs. The telomeric probe hybridized on metaphase chromosome of L. fulvus showed the spot signals at the teromeric regions (terminal end) of all chromosomes. The in situ localization pattern of d(CA)15 microsatellites was similar to be abundantly distributed on some interstitial and telomeric regions of all chromosomes. Here we provide a classical and some molecular genetics information for L. fulvus useful as a species specific marker in this fish species.
