Abstract Thailand saw the proliferation of Civil Society Organizations in the development works in the last three decades. The student uprising in 1973 and the political liberalization process of the 1980s and democratization of the 1990s contributed significantly in the expansion of the CSOs. Despite the fact that civil society organizations have proved to be valuable in boosting the grassroots culture and are serving as the spokespersons for the people’s interests and presenters of alternative policies. CSOs are often questioned for their capabilities in ‘giving voice to the poor’ as well as their institutional inefficiencies and are often charged for not being able to meet, represent and reach to the people that they should be reaching. They are charged of being technically incapable, lacking the accountability, transparency, opportunities for internal participation, evaluations and self-regulations, and heavily politicized in nature and these reasons are said to have contributed to the declining credibility of CSOs amongst their constituencies and donor institutions. In this context, this cross-sectional survey research aims to explore the nature of internal organizational governance practiced by the CSOs in Thailand. The data were collected from 167 CSOs during May-June, 2015 using a structured questionnaire via email. The questionnaire consisted of three sections: general information, governance mechanisms and external environment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
