Abstract |
The actinomycete strain C184 was isolated from soil in the conservation area around Chulabhorn dam, Thailand. It was identified as Streptomyces auratus based on its morphological, cultural, physiological and biochemical characteristics together with cell wall components and 16S rDNA sequence. S. auratus strain C184 exhibited a strong antagonistic activity against several fungal phytopathogens viz. Colletotrichum capsici, C. gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum and Sclerotium rolfsii. Observation of the inhibited fungal mycelium using a phase-contrast microscope revealed the abnormal fungal hyphae with thickened wall and bulbous-like formation. The 20-fold and 2-fold diluted C184 culture filtrate completely inhibited hyphal growth and spore germination of C. capsici, respectively. In addition, S. auratus strain C184 was found to produce Indole Acetic Acid (13.53 µg/ml) in a medium containing tryptophan and solubilize tricalcium phosphate (154 µg/ml). These results indicated the high potential of S. auratus strain C184 to be used as a biological control and plant growth promoting agent |
