Abstract |
Bioethanol has been used as an alternative energy source. To improve the ethanol production via continuous fermentation process, aeration was supplied during the fermentation. The continuous ethanol fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae NP01 immobilized on sweet sorghum stalk pieces was carried out in a 0.78-L single tubular packed bed bioreactor. Firstly, effect of aeration rate on ethanol production efficiency of continuous fermentation was investigated at the dilution rate of 0.02 h-1, and sweet sorghum juice containing 230 g L-1 of sugar and 6 g L-1 of yeast extract was used as an ethanol production medium. The result showed that ethanol concentration (PE) and productivity (QP) under the aeration rate of 0.05 vvm were 29% higher than those under no aeration. Then, the initial sugar concentration and dilution rate under this aeration rate were optimized to obtain high ethanol production efficiency. Three responses, namely sugar consumption (SC), PE and QP, were appropriately set for the criteria to determine the optimum condition. According to response surface methodology, the quadratic models of responses were successfully developed. The optimum condition was initial sugar of 160 g L-1 and dilution rate of 0.05 h-1, which thus gave SC, PE and QP of 90.8%, 75.4 g l-1 and 3.72 g l-1 h-1, respectively at steady state. |
