| บทคัดย่อ |
This article presents a critique on the concepts of Ecosystem Services (ES) and Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) as an approach for environmental conservation. These concepts have been widely recognized among international academics working in the environmental sciences and environmental social sciences since the early 21st century, and continuing to draw interest more recently in Thailand. The authors present a critical view from scholars who tackled the current issues of global political-economy, namely “neoliberalism”, the ideology that was criticized for promoting free trade extremists and transforming everything into commodities, including nature. Along this line of thought, ES and PES were unmistakably another way of commodifying nature; rather than meeting conservation ends, these approaches could plausibly worsen environmental problems. The conceptual challenge posed by this article should, as the authors expected, stimulate debate and real progress towards solving environmental problems and the way forward for better environmental solutions. |
