Abstract Melatonin is widely used medically, but there are no rapid methods for determination of commercial products. This study used low cost commercial carbon screen printed electrodes (SPE) for rapid melatonin determination using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The ferricyanide system was used to test electrode stability at various scan rates in PBS. After optimization, a linear calibration curve for melatonin was obtained in the concentration range from 0-250 ng/µL (r2=0.99), with a detection limit of 0.30 ng/µL. Melatonin was determined in five commercial products with good accuracy (0.6-3.5%) compared to HPLC, however precision was lower (SPE 3.3-7.5% RSD compared to 0.07 to 0.16% RDS for HPLC). SPE with rapid electrochemical determination provides ease of handling with small volume, no sample extraction, low cost, electrodes can reused at least 10 times, giving advantages for screening of pharmaceutical products compared with traditional HPLC.
