| Abstract |
The objective was to evaluate the effect of organic trace minerals supplement during pre- and postpartum dairy cows on parturition, incidence of retained fetal membranes, first estrus and ovulation. Prepartum Holstein dairy cows (n=15) were randomly allocated to either control (C) or organic trace minerals (OM, Bioplex®) supplemented (5 g/h/d) diets. All cows were fed the same diet, except for the source of supplemental Bioplex®, as a total mixed ration (TMR). Treatments were initiated 21 days before the expected calving date and continued through 21 days of postpartum. There was no significant difference in percentage of retained fetal membranes (33.3 and 0%, for C and OM group; P>0.05). However, placental expulsion period in the control cows was longer than the OM group (21.7±5.9 and 3.1±0.2 hours, P<0.05). In addition, percentage of cows exhibiting estrous behavior and ovulation, day of first estrus and parturition scores were significantly different between groups (P<0.05). This study indicates that organic trace minerals supplementation had a positive effect on parturition, estrus and ovulation, day of first estrus, and reduction placental expulsion period in dairy cows. |
