Abstract Micro-tensile bond strength of different surface treatments on sclerotic dentin Anawat Kwansirikul, Daraporn Sae-Lee, Wilawan Weraarchakul, Onauma Angwaravong, Thidarat Angwarawong Department of Prosthodontics , Faculty of Dentristry, Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen, 40000, Thailand email: anawat_nut@hotmail.com Abstract The clinical problem has been reported common about the dislodgement of composite core restoration from sclerotic dentin during tooth preparation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) between sclerotic dentin with different surface treatments and composite core build-up. A total of 48 extracted human molars were divided into four groups depending on the type of dentin and surface treatments. All groups were applied with self-etch bonding system (Contax Activator®, DMG). Normal dentin in Group 1 and sclerotic dentin in Group 2 were applied according to manufacturer instruction. The sclerotic dentin in Group 3 were duplicated in etch-prime time. The sclerotic dentin in group 4 were pre-treatmented with 37% phosphoric acid (Universal etching gel, DMG) before using the self-etch bonding system. All groups were restored with composite resin and storaged for 24 hours at 37 °C distilled water. Then, twelve specimens in each group were sectioned into 43 resin-dentin bond stick specimens (1 mm2) and tested using µTBS. The result showed Group 1 had the highest µTBS (19.00 ± 5.42 MPa) while Group 3 the lowest one (15.22 ± 5.13 MPa). Group 3 had significantly lower µTBS value than group 1 (p < 0.05) and group 4 (18.36 ± 4.63MPa) (p < 0.05) respectively. Group 4 was µTBS closely to group 1 and had no statistically significant different with Group 1. Our results indicated that surface treatment with 37% phosphoric acid prior to application of self-etch bonding system may improve bonding between sclerotic dentin and composite core build up. Keywords: sclerotic dentin, self-etch bonding, composite core build up, micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS)
