Abstract |
This study aims to determine Land use and land cover (LULC) changes in Khon Kaen city of Thailand using the landscape fragmentation analysis together with multi-temporal Landsat data, acquired during 1990-2015. We employed Support Vector Machine (SVM) technique for classifying the multi-temporal Landsat data in order to derive the map of LULC changes in Khon Kaen city and subsequently to utilize FRAGSTATS® for analyzing the landscape fragmentation in order to investigate driving factors. The results of the multi-temporal change detection show that built-up area, green area, water body and barealand increased while agriculture area decreased (from 91.3 percent in 1990 to 74.8 percent in 2015). However, agriculture area still mainly dominate land use/cover class in Khon Kaen city. Consequently, the landscape has become more highly fragmented as indicated by an increase in the patch number and a decrease in the mean patch size of agriculture class. The land use/cover changes in Khon Kaen city have occurred because of the interactions of economic development, education system development, urban population growth as well as traffic infrastructure. While four of those factors influencing on the changes of land use/cover in urban zone, transportation network plays an essential role in the increase of built-up area in rural districts, where located away from city center. |
