     Abstract Poor stand establishment is one of the major problems in supersweet corn (Zea mays L. saccharata) production. In this study, four priming methods were investigated for the improvement of the low seed vigor of supersweet corn. Fresh and artificially accelerated aged (AA aged) seeds of Hi-brix53 (hybrid) and open pollinated F3 of ATS5 (OP) were primed for 12 hours with distilled water (H2O), 0.33% wood vinegar (WV), 0.59% NaCl and 1.12% CaCl2, to explore the effects of the different seed priming methods on physiological and biochemical changes in the seed during the imbibition stage. The results showed that percentage germination was significantly improved in both fresh and AA aged seeds of both corn varieties after priming, with the WV treatment significantly increasing the germination percentage in fresh hybrid seed. The priming treatments significantly reduced the malondialdehyde content in fresh hybrid, AA aged hybrid and fresh OP seeds. The activity of antioxidant enzymes, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) varied in both the fresh or AA aged seeds of the hybrid and OP varieties, but APX was distinguished for the modulation of the oxidative stress in the supersweet corn seed. However, sugar metabolism, determined by invertase and amylase activities, was suppressed in the fresh hybrid seed but there was a varied response in the fresh OP seed.
