Abstract |
Butanol fermentation by mixed cultures of Clostridium sp. and Arthrobacter sp. was studied. Arthrobacter sp. was used to create strictly anaerobic condition, whereas Clostridium sp. was used as a butanol producer. Substrate used in this study was sugarcane molasses supplemented with dried spent yeast (DSY). In control experiment, N2 flushing was used to create anaerobic condition, and single culture of Clostridium sp. was used to produce butanol. The fermentation was carried out in a 1-L screw capped bottle. The results showed that butanol concentration (PB) and butanol productivity (QB) of the control experiment were 8.67 g L-1 and 0.24 g L-1h-1, respectively. The results indicated that DSY promoted the rate of butanol fermentation. Under mixed culture conditions, Arthrobacter sp. was first inoculated into the molasses medium supplemented with DSY, then Clostridium sp. was transferred into the medium at 24 h of fermentation. The results showed that the PB and QB values were 7.91 g L-1 and 0.22 g L-1h-1, respectively. The PB and QB values were similar to those of the control experiment, indicating that Arthrobacter sp. could be used to create anaerobic condition instead of using N2 flushing method. |
