Abstract |
The recurrent branch of the median nerve is the branch of the median nerve which supplies the thenar muscles. It usually passes distal to the transverse carpal ligament. Anatomic variations of the recurrent branch of the median nerve are described in the literatures. The aim of this study was to report the anatomic variation of the position of the recurrent branch of the median nerve. A high origin of recurrent motor branch of the right median nerve was presented from a 67-year-old Thai male cadaver. The recurrent motor nerve was branched from the median nerve at 2.4 cm proximal to the proximal border of the deep transverse carpal ligament. Then it radially lay parallel to the median nerve through the deep transverse carpal ligament and supplies the thenar muscle at the point just distally to the distal border of the deep transverse carpal ligament. This branch prone to have injury in radial side surgical approach. Surgeon should carefully explore and consider this motor branch whenever they dissect or operate the median nerve such as in carpal tunnel surgery, flexor carpi radialis surgery or distal end radius surgery. |
