| Abstract |
This study aimed to examine characteristics and minerals components of surface of arrested dentinal caries after silver diamine fluoride (SDF) or silver nitrate (AgNO3) application. Four primary molars with dentinal caries on occlusal surface were studied. Each tooth was separated into 6 groups, including three sound dentine (group 1: un-treated, group 2: SDF, and group 3: AgNO3) and three dentinal caries groups (group 4: un-treated, group 5: SDF, and group 6: AgNO3). The specimens were kept at relative humidity 100% and 37oC for 7 days. Surface characteristics were evaluated by scanning electron microscope and minerals component analysis, including calcium/phosphorus (Ca/P) and fluoride (F). Sound dentine in groups 2 and 3 and carious dentine in groups 5 and 6 became discoloration and harden. However, SDF application on dentine caries showed better results over the AgNO3 application, regarding both more compacted surface structure and higher F and Ca/P ratios. Findings from this in vitro study support results from previous studies on the use of SDF in management of dentinal caries progression in primary teeth.
