Abstract The mixture of Black sugarcane and Toei-hom juice is an herbal juice used as herbal medicine to treat and alleviate various diseases. This study investigated preliminary phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activity of the mixture of Black sugarcane (Saccharum sinense Roxb.) and Toei-hom (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) juice. Three lyophilized juices including the mixture of Black sugarcane and Toeihom juice (BT) , Black sugarcane juice and Toei-hom juice were used in this study. Phytochemical screening was performed by various qualitative methods to determine alkaloids, saponins, carbohydrates, proteins, flavonoids and phenolics. TLC profiling was carried out using proper solvent system. Antioxidant activity was analyzed by DPPH radical scavenging assay, ABTS radical scavenging assay and FRAP assay. The results showed that three juices confirmed the presence of various phytochemical constituents. Alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavonoids and phenolics were present in all juices. Saponins were absent in Toei-hom juice, whereas proteins were absent in all juices. Furthermore, the IC50 values determined by DPPH and ABTS assay were lower for the mixture of Black sugarcane and Toei-hom juice (IC50 = 287.72 μg/ml, 913.39 μg/ml, respectively) than either Black sugarcane juice (IC50 = 325.98 μg/ml, 1,265.31 μg/ml, respectively) or Toeihom juice (IC50 = 580.07 μg/ml, 1,330.43 μg/ml, respectively) . Although the antioxidant activity of all juices were lower than standard vitamin C (IC50 = 23.73 μg/ml) for DPPH assay and standard trolox (IC50 = 11.75 μg/ml) for ABTS assay. Moreover, FRAP values of all juices were lower than standard trolox. We found that all juices showed interesting preliminary phytochemical constituents and had antioxidant activity that could be useful for the maintenance of human health. The mixture of Black sugarcane and Toei-hom juice could have potential applications for further research.
