Abstract |
The alternative fuel is become important to replace the use of petroleum fuel. Chemical catalytic
reaction under supercritical condition is widely used in the petroleum refinery to crack larger molecules and/or to remove S, N and other needless components from petroleum. Application of vegetable oils as feedstock for biofuel production via hydro-processing is a promising way for production of renewable hydrocarbons. In this work, H2 was fed with palm oil to produce synthetic biofuel via high pressure pack bed reactor and two different catalysts were employed (Pd/Al2O3 and Pt/Al2O3). The effect of different temperatures (500°C and 530°C) was investigated and the pressure was operated at 5 MPa in both temperatures. The results revealed that, the Pd/Al2O3 produced the biofuel products after distillation and yielded at about 90% in both temperatures while Pt/Al2O3 yielded approximately 80% and 75% as temperature increased at 500°C and 530°C. The biofuel product properties were characterised and found that the densities were obtained at 0.7588 g mL-1 and 0.7801 g mL-1 at 500°C and 530°C when the Pd/Al2O3 was used while in case of Pt/Al2O3 provided at 0.7721 g mL-1 and 0.7717 g mL-1, respectively. Moreover, The American Petroleum Institute gravities (API gravity) showed at 54.4 and 49.4 for Pd/Al2O3 and 51.2 and 51.3 in case of Pt/Al2O3 catalyst under 500°C and 530°C. It could be concluded that the optimal condition obtained to produce biofuel by both catalysts were 500°C and 5 MPa.
