Abstract
In translation studies on audiovisual productions, swearing seems to be challenging because of its vulgarity, so it is difficult to translate into the target language since the swear words should be suitable and acceptable to meet the norm of the target culture. Translators must figure out how to have these words permitted when they appear on screen. Hence, the aim of this study is to examine the strategies used in translating English swear words into Thai in the subtitled version from the American R-rated movie, The Wolf of Wall Street. A coding scheme was developed adopting Toury’s (1995) concepts of norms. The results of the study revealed that there were 784 occurrences of swearing in this case study, and they can be categorized in to six types of swearing: abusive, expletive, emphatic, idiomatic, dysphemistic, and literal swearing. The words from the emphatic swearing group are most frequently used in the movie. It is also found that the translator decided not to translate a number of forbidden
words into the target language; in other words, they adopted an omission strategy. The findings are useful for translators, movie companies, as well as material developers in the area of
translation studies.
