Abstract NH4NiPO4●H2O (NNPO) powders were synthesized by the hydrothermal method using Ni(NO3)2●6H2O, H3PO4 and NH4OH as starting materials. Ni2P2O7 (NPO) were obtained by annealing NNPO powders for 1 and 3 h at each temperature of 500, 600 and 700 oC in argon atmosphere. The phase structure and morphology of all samples were characterized using TG-DTA, XRD and SEM/EDS mapping. FT-IR and XANES spectra were employed for functional group analysis and the oxidation state of Ni cation in all NPO samples, respectively. XRD analysis confirmed an orthorhombic structure of NNPO powder with space group Pmnm(59), while all NPO samples were a monoclinic crystal structure with space group B21/c(14). The calculated average crystallite sizes of all NPO samples decreased with the increase of annealing temperature. SEM micrographs of all NPO samples showed thin sheet-like morphology with the width and thickness of approximately 1 μm and 50 nm, respectively. XANES results of all NPO samples confirmed the oxidation state 2+ and 3+ of Ni cations. The electrochemical performance of the obtained activate NPO electrode were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge GCD measurements and impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method in electrolyte of 3 M KOH solution. The GCD results of NPO electrodes exhibited a high specific capacitance of 566 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and excellent cycling stability (98% retained after 100 cycles) for sample annealed at 600 oC for 1h.
