Abstract This study determines an optimum pulse mode based on total energy use, specific energy consumption and biodiesel yields. Biodiesel is produced in a pulse sonication reactor under atmospheric pressure (P-USA). The pulse modes (ON-time/OFF-time) were varied at 3/1, 3/2, 3/3, 6/1, 6/2 and 6/3 while methanol to oil molar ratio, catalyst loading, and temperature was controlled. Sensitivity analysis of BD yield and total energy used was practiced to determine an optimum pulse mode. The results showed that 6/2 pulse mode gave a better yield for the same 30 min reaction time compared with other modes.
