บทคัดย่อ This study was to investigate phenol based pharmaceutical-contaminated wastewater treatment using entrapped cell phenol-degrading cultures and activated sludge. Wastewater was different phenol concentration of 5, 50, and 500 mg/L and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (500 mg/L). Barium alginate beads at barium chloride and sodium alginate concentrations of 3:5 % (w/v) were prepared. Batch experiment with initial MLSS of 1,000 mg/L (AS) and 107 CFU/ml (PD) was performed. All reactors were sharked at room temperature. The reactor have 6 type was 1) AS free cell reactor, 2) entrapped AS cell reactor, 3) entrapped PD cell reactor, 4) AS free cell and entrapped PD cell reactor, 5) entrapped AS and entrapped PD cell reactor, 6) entrapped AS with PD cell reactor. The analyzed was measured COD, phenol concentration and observation by SEM. The result from this study showed that the wastewater treatment incorporated with the cell entrapment technology is a promising process. The reactor successfully performed hazardous substance (phenol) removal and wastewater (COD) treatment of up to 90 and 80%, respectively. The entrapment material lessened contact between microbial cells and phenol resulting in high cell growth and wastewater treatment performance. Modes of the cell entrapment influenced the treatability. The co-culture entrapment could speed up treatment efficiency. The best entrapped cell reactor (EPA) increased phenol and COD treatment by 3.5 and 3.7 times, respectively compared to traditional AS reactor.
