Abstract |
Introduction: The global rise of overweight and obese population based on body mass index has been reported. The higher body mass index, the increased risk of the noncommunicable diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Due to antioxidant property of anthocyanin and prebiotic activity of inulin and rice bran extracts, the capsules containing these components may provide health benefits for overweight and obese individuals.
Purpose: To investigate the effects of prebiotic capsule containing anthocyanin, inulin, and rice bran extracts on anthropometric parameters in overweight and obese individuals.
Method: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel trial was performed. Sixty overweight and obese individuals were randomly assigned to either the prebiotic group (age 38 ± 1.61 years, body mass index 28.9 ± 0.60 kg/m2) (n=30) or the placebo (Age 38 ± 1.73 years, body mass index 29.5 ± 0.88 kg/m2) (n=30) and were given prebiotic capsules containing anthocyanin, inulin and rice bran extracts (4.2 g/day) or placebo (maltodextrin) 4 times/ day for 30 days. Anthropometrics including body mass, BMI, waist circumference and hip circumference were measured at baseline and the end of the study.
Results: There was no significant difference in anthropometric parameters between the two groups. However, when compared with baseline, consumption of prebiotic capsules for 30 days decreased hip circumference (105.48 ± 1.17 vs 103.77 ± 1.25 cm) in overweight and obese individuals.
Conclusion: Within prebiotic group, consumption of prebiotic capsules for 30 days may enhance decreased hip circumference in overweight and obese individuals. The further study in longer period should be performed to support this result.
