Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare physical performance among body mass index (BMI) groups in the community-dwelling elderly. A total of 204 elderly males and females, aged at least 65 years old were enrolled in the study. The subjects were divided into three groups, including those with normal weight (BMI = 18.5–22.9 kg/m2), overweight (BMI = 23.0–27.4 kg/m2), and obesity (BMI ≥ 27.5 kg/m2). Then, their physical performance was assessed using five functional tests, including the 10MWT, TUG, FTSST, 6MWT and CSR. After adjustment for confounding factors (i.e., gender, age, history of falls, and underlying diseases), only the 6MWT reported a statistically significant difference among the groups (p < 0.001). The obese elderly had a tendency to have decreased physical performance, especially regarding functional endurance, when compared with the normal weight and overweight individuals. Furthermore, they were also reported to have many medical problems.
