Abstract The aim of this study was to optimize the proportions of biogas effluent from ethanol industry and filter cake from sugar industry to produce methane in batch fermentation. Mixture design with D-optimal was used to design the experiments. Methane production was carried out in 60 mL serum bottle with 35 mL working volume using anaerobic sludge from biogas plant as the inoculum. Results indicated that the optimal proportions of biogas effluent and filter cake for methane production were 30.00 and 30.00 g-volatile solid (VS)/L, respectively, in which the highest methane yield of 175.07 mL-CH4/g-VS was achieved. An increase in the filter cake proportion co-digested with biogas effluent resulting in higher methane production. Co-digestion of biogas effluent with filter cake gave a higher methane content, 63.19%, while a mono-digestion of biogas effluent gave a methane content of 44.69% suggesting an improvement of methane production produce by co-digestion.
