     Abstract Rainfall pattern and distribution analyses are crucial for management of water resources and rainfed agriculture. Identification of homogeneous rainfall characteristic zone is prerequisite to rainfall analyses. Our objective is therefore to evaluate rainfall zoning of the southern region of the Northeast Thailand. Two popular cluster analysis techniques were chosen for this task i.e. hierarchical analysis method and K-mean method. Rainfall data were collected from 12 pluviometric stations, i.e. one each from Chaiyaphum and Si Sa Ket, 2 each from Buri Ram and Ubon Ratchathani, and 3 each from Nakorn Ratchasima and Surin. The monthly rainfall data, ranging from 1987 to 2014, were divided into 3 periods, i.e. 1987-1996, 1996-2005, 2005-2014. The rainfall characteristics were grouped into 3 zones, i.e. low, medium, and high rainfall. The hierarchical method gave fairly consistent results. For the first two periods, groupings were identical, however for the last period the high rainfall region shrank to the 2 stations of Ubon Ratchathani. The k-mean method results for the high rainfall group has 2 stations from Ubon Ratchathani. Moreover, the middle period (1995-2005) for medium rainfall group will shrinks from 5 stations to 4 stations, make to station high rainfall group increase, and the results is according with the Stong La Nina happen at 1999 and 2000
