Abstract |
Science communication (e.g. words, illustrations, data visualization) competency is a necessary component of scientific literacy for students. Science communication practice in Thailand is emphasized in the National Core Curriculum. Yet the Thai cultural context may impede students’ development of communication skills both in daily life and in a science classroom. This study aimed to investigate the difficulty of science communication in 10th grade students from an urban high school. An open-ended questionnaire was employed along with classroom observation and teacher interviews which were subjected to qualitatively analysis. Three classrooms were selected including their teachers (3) and 120 students for the study. Three major factors were found to explain difficulty with science communication: (1) Lack of understanding of the content to be communicated. (2) Lack of familiarity with scientific language and technical terms. And (3), inattention or lack of response from a receiver. This can be explained to be a consequence of both western science and critical oral engagement being foreign to Thai culture, which extends to the classroom and student-teacher discussion.
