Abstract Abstract Background: Currently, more than 10 million people are at risk of liver fluke infection caused by Opisthorchis viverrini, the carcinogenic human liver fluke, in Southeast Asia. There are more than 6 million people are suspected as population at risk of O. viverrini, the fish-borne diseases, where consumed frequently undercooked fish. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between socioeconomic and behavior associated with raw fish consumption, the intermediate host of O. viverrini, in Northeastern Thailand. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in the years of 2019 by applying multi-stage random sampling method and completed a self-administered questionnaire. Generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) was employed to analyze association with raw fish consumption. Adjusted odds ratio and 95%CI were used for determining statistical significance. Results: Of the total 905 participants, the majority of them were female (56.35%) with a mean age of 42.70±12.05 years. Factors that showed significantly associated with raw fish consumption included health literacy (HL) at the low and moderate level (ORadj = 6.86; 95%CI: 4.18-11.27) and (ORadj = 1.61; 95%CI: 1.03-2.50), feeding dogs and cats with raw fish (ORadj = 4.33; 95%CI: 2.94-6.38), farmer (ORadj = 1.98; 95%CI: 1.27-3.08), male (ORadj = 1.90; 95%CI: 1.40-2.59), protection motivation theory (PMT) on raw fish consumption at the low level (ORadj = 1.80; 95%CI: 1.13-4.31), lower and primary education (ORadj = 1.49; 95%CI: 1.07-2.07), monthly family incomes below 10,000 baht (ORadj = 1.40; 95%CI: 1.13 - 4.26). Conclusions: Socioeconomic and behavior were influenced on raw fish consumption that having a chance to develop O. viverrini infection. Therefore, O. viverrini preventing and controlling program is needed; especially focus on HL and PMT on raw fish consumption.
