Abstract This study aimed to investigate translating the non equivalence at word level in Salon News Column in American website employed by English major students, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University. The translation strategies at word level by Baker’ s taxonomy (1992) were used to analyze in this study. 25 participants were asked to translate the news column, and during translating both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries were allowed to look up the unfamiliar and unknown words. After identifying the translation strategies used in the tasks, those used strategies were calculated into percentage. The result revealed that the most frequently used strategies is translation by paraphrasing related words (29.04% ), followed by translation by omission ( 21. 25% ) , translation by paraphrasing unrelated words ( 14. 37% ) , translation by more neutral or less expressive (12.57% ), translation by loanwords or loan words plus explanation ( 10. 47% ) , translation by more general words ( 9. 88% ) , and translation by cultural substitution (2.39% ) respectively. However, based on this result, the translation by illustration did not appear.
