Abstract |
To describe the physician’s prescribing patterns and attitudes toward Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western Medicine (WM) with Type 2 Diabetes in China. Methods: The mix method was used to triangulate between qualitative and quantitative sources in physician study. Ten physicians were studied by face-to-face semi-structured interviews and 412 prescriptions collected from patients’ medical record. Results: The results of quantitative and qualitative study were accordant. In thematic analysis, the following themes were emerged from interview: “prescription preferences are influenced by physicians, drug and patient”. TCMs were used in only 33 prescriptions with the early cases or preventing complications and relieved symptoms of T2D. In this study, the role of WM in first-line diabetes treatment is established, while the role of TCM is the adjuvant therapy for preventing complications and relieving symptoms. Conclusion: Even this study was conducted in China, the world leading country in TCM, though Chinese physicians did not select TCM as the first-line drug for treating diabetes. |
