Abstract |
Non-formal Islamic school is the oldest form of Islamic education, and a fundamental community in Indonesia. However, decreasing government support has put many non-formal Islamic schools into a state of financial instability, and has given rise to a need for a solution to school sustainability. Entrepreneurship has recently emerged as an alternative to the financial problem. It generates income and reduces schools’ dependency on government support. To improve an understanding of entrepreneurship in Islamic education, this study examined the development process and the effect of entrepreneurship on a non-formal Islamic school. It employed a qualitative method of 10 in-depth interviews with key informants involved in the school’s entrepreneurship development. The findings suggested that the entrepreneurship development had five phases: exploring, planning, producing, communicating and marketing, and reflecting. The production created more jobs for locals. The findings highlighted online platforms, global networks, and partnerships as the key mechanisms that facilitated the success of entrepreneurship at the Islamic boarding school known as Pondok Pesantren Al Qohar. |
