Abstract |
Exercise may reduce risk of falls in the elderly. The objective of the study was to determine the ef-fect of a progressive step marching exercise (PSME) program on balance ability, lower limb mus-cle strength, aerobic capacity, quality of life, and fear of falling in the elderly. Cluster randomized controlled trial was selected where 30 elderly participants (aged 69.22±3.3 years) from a com-munity were supervised having the PSME and 30 (aged 70.27±3.0 years) from another communi-ty were assigned in a control group. All participants in both groups underwent Time up ang go test (TUGT), One leg standing test (OLST), Five time sit to stand test (FTSST), 2 minute step test (2MST), The World Health Organization Quality of Life-Thai version (WHOQOL-BREF-THAI), and Fall efficacy scale Thai version (FES-I) at baseline, after exercise at 4 and 8 weeks. The PSME group received the program for 8 weeks while those in the control group were instructed to con-tinue their normal activity. After training, the PSME showed significant improvement (p<0.05) in TUGT, FTSST, WHOQOL-BREF-THAI, and FES-I when compared to the control group (P<0.05). In conclusion, PSME program could improve balance ability, lower limb muscle strength, quality of life, and fear of falling in the elderly. |
