     Abstract The study aimed to examine of instructional strategy for supporting Thai senior high school student‟s ability in constructing scientific explanation of electrochemistry. The participants include three teachers who were teaching electrochemistry in different three schools of northeastern of Thailand. Methodology regarded interpretive paradigm. To develop understanding what and how science teachers‟ existing ideas about scientific explanation of electrochemistry, the method of inquiry was designed through three methods including class observation, teacher interview, and the researcher as participant‟s critical reflection. All three methods were analyzed as content analysis in order to make understanding on Thai science teachers‟ existing ideas of teaching electrochemistry for content standard indicators of explanation. Findings revealed that there were some science teachers‟ existing ideas about scientific explanation of electrochemistry. These include indicators about explanation, and students‟ opportunities to express their scientific explanation. For indicators of explanation, teachers perceived that the indicators about explanation were not only provided by the term of „explanation‟ but also in other terms (e.g. rang the ability of agents, balance chemical equation, connect electric circuit, write, and calculate). Teachers‟ existing ideas about students‟ opportunities to express their scientific explanation could be viewed as explanation in sense of assessing students‟ understanding on scientific concepts. These findings suggested some further assumption of instructional strategy for supporting senior high school student‟s ability in constructing scientific explanation of electrochemistry.
