Abstract Water is a fundamental factor in the livelihood of human. Increasing of water consumption creates water pollutions including bacteria contaminations causing many diseases, so the water treatment is required before uses. Chlorine is popular used because of low cost and effective method, but it produces an unwanted odor. Thus, alternative methods are studied for solving this problem. Using of plant extracts are an interesting choice since their chemical properties can efficiently inhibit many bacteria. This study aimed to extract five plants (Garcinia cowa, Polygonum odoratum, Piper betle, Piper sarmentosum, Cratoxylum formosum) with ethanol and methanol for the antibacterial study against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using a disc diffusion assay. The results showed that ethanol and methanol extracts of Piper betle had the highest antibacterial activities with the average inhibition zone of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli at 15.3 and 18.6 mm and 22.5 and 24.6 mm, respectively whereas both ethanol and methanol extracts of Polygonum odoratum had the lowest antibacterial activities with the average inhibition zone of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli at 7.0 and 7.0 mm and 7.0 and 7.0 mm, respectively. Therefore, the plant extracts can be further applied for the antibacterial purpose in the water treatment.
