Abstract |
"Towns" have played an important role in China's modernization and urbanization, and the process of urbanization, which has been developing at an astonishing pace in the last 40 years, started with the development of towns. In 2019 there were 20975 towns in China, of which nearly 70% were distributed in mountainous areas (Zhu Hao, Chen Zongcai, 2020:102). And the unique geographical conditions and the long history of towns make Chongqing the most typical area with a dense concentration of towns in mountainous areas. In recent years, there are many research results on China's urbanization history, but there are very few results that study the urbanization change pattern of towns, especially those in mountainous areas. So this paper takes Chongqing's mountainous towns as a sample, and traces the rapid urbanization process of China after 1949, and analyzes the urbanization development process of Chongqing's mountainous towns. It is pointed out that national macro-control strategies are the important factor affecting the development of the towns in Chongqing, and one of the important reasons affecting decision-making is Chongqing's unique geographical location and natural conditions. We usually think of mountainous conditions as factors limiting the urban expansion of modern towns, but through the analysis in this paper, we find that these natural constraints sometimes provide opportunities for the development of mountainous towns in Chongqing, contributing to the particularities in their urbanization patterns. In fact, in the long history of the development of mountainous towns in Chongqing, a regional ecological culture adapted to these special geographical and natural environments has been formed. Therefore, the article also discusses the impact and damage of urbanization on the regional cultural ecology of mountainous towns in Chongqing while bringing economic growth, in the first half of China's urbanization process driven by the pursuit of "GDP" growth (from 1978 to 2012). And the article gives suggestions that we should restore and rebuild the cultural ecology of Chongqing's small mountain towns in the second half of urbanization (after 2012) when China's urbanization is slowing down and the construction of towns with special characteristics is vigorously pursued. |
