Abstract Chongqing is a city with 3000 years of history and a typical mountainous landform in Southwest China. It is located at the intersection of the Yangtze River and Jialing River, so the birthplace of the city, also the core CBD area of the downtown in today,is divided into composed of Jiangbei, Yuzhong and Nanan plates by the two rivers which is a unique urban shape. Jiangbeicheng is the most important one of these three blocks, with a history of 3000 years, and it is one of the original cities of Chongqing. Its urban development has experienced many ups and downs but never stopped. However, in the study of Chongqing urban history, the research on the history of Jiangbeicheng is very limited, and the cases are isolated, and lack of comprehensive analysis from the perspective of contemporary history study. This paper systematically sorts out the historical track of the urban development of Jiangbeicheng which is put in the background of Chongqing's urban development. Connecting with the development process of Chinese society and the objectivity of its material environment, this paper focuses on the analysis of the reasons for several urban changes in Jiangbeicheng. Moreover, from the historical view of dialectical materialism, this paper points out that the urban development of Jiangbei City is essentially a spontaneous natural historical process.
